Support for Public Art Projects in Small and Medium-Sized Cities
Bloomberg Philanthropies: Asphalt Art Initiative
Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Asphalt Art Initiative is designed to fund visual art interventions on roadways, pedestrian spaces, and public infrastructure in small and medium-sized U.S. cities (with populations of 30,000 to 500,000). The Initiative’s goals are to improve street and pedestrian safety, revitalize and beautify underutilized public space, and promote collaboration and civic engagement in local communities. Eligible sites can include portions of active roadways, sidewalks, pedestrian plazas, or transportation infrastructure such as traffic barriers, highway underpasses, or utility boxes. The program will award grants of up to $25,000 each to ten cities. Each grant must be used to design and implement at least one project in the applicant city during calendar year 2020. The application deadline is December 12, 2019. Organizations Offering Creative Community Programs Recognized
The Renewal Awards
The Renewal Awards, sponsored by The Atlantic and Allstate, were created to celebrate the social innovation demonstrated by local nonprofit organizations that are finding creative solutions to America’s most pressing problems. The Renewal Awards recognize organizations and individuals as they drive positive change in their communities, and help them make an even bigger impact. Five winners will each receive $40,000 in funding from The Atlantic and Allstate; one of the winners will also be presented with the Allstate Youth Empowerment Award. The nomination deadline is December 10, 2019, at 6 pm EST. Visit The Atlantic website to review the FAQs and official rules, and to submit an online nomination.

Local Events Focused on Urban Birds Funded
Celebrate Urban Birds Mini-Grant Program
The Celebrate Urban Birds Mini-Grant Program, an initiative of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, supports community organizations and educators throughout the United States who host neighborhood events that introduce the public to birds found in urban areas. Examples of eligible events include bird-activity days at local museums, libraries, or community centers, as well as art and gardening activities at clubs, schools, or senior centers. Mini-grants ranging from $100 to $750 are provided. Organizations working with underserved communities are strongly encouraged to apply. The application deadline is December 31, 2019. Grants Promote Healthcare Initiatives for Adults with Developmental Disabilities
WITH Foundation
The mission of the WITH Foundation is to promote the establishment of comprehensive healthcare for adults with developmental disabilities designed to address their unique and fundamental needs. Grants are provided to nonprofit organizations based within the United States. The focus is on programs that improve delivery of healthcare to adults with developmental disabilities and address at least one of the following issues: improve health practitioner competency through education or training programs; address the current inadequate reimbursement system; advance formal care coordination, including the utilization of trained support personnel and caregivers; increase public awareness regarding the inadequacies of developmentally-disabled care in order to advance systemic change; perform social policy research; promote national efforts in digital health that support developers to include the perspectives of individuals with developmental disabilities in the design process; increase understanding of supported decision making in healthcare settings; and identify and overcome barriers to high-quality healthcare access. Nonprofit Organizations in Ohio Supported
The Kettering Fund
The mission of The Kettering Fund is to support scientific, medical, social, and educational studies and research conducted by nonprofit organizations and carried out within the state of Ohio. The Fund’s areas of interest include education; environment; public/society benefit; arts, culture, and humanities; human services; and health. For the upcoming funding cycle, Request Summaries may be submitted between December 1, 2019, and January 31, 2020. Funds for Efforts to Improve Emergency Care in California
CARESTAR Foundation
The CARESTAR Foundation is dedicated to improving the quality and availability of emergency and trauma care and aiding in the prevention of injury, disability, and death in California. The Foundation’s grantmaking focus is on health-related initiatives that improve care and expand access to emergency and trauma services, particularly with vulnerable populations and in rural areas; prevent injuries, reduce suffering, and save lives by fostering the development of effective standards and services; or foster educational support for innovative healthcare programs and create stronger safeguards to protect healthcare workers and minimize risk when treating patients. Interested organizations may contact the Foundation at any time to set up a meeting to discuss the possibility of grant support. Grants Strengthen Programs for Underserved Children in North Carolina
Carolina Hurricanes Foundation: Game Changer Grants
The Carolina Hurricanes Foundation supports nonprofit organizations in North Carolina that share the Foundation’s focus on children’s health and education, with an emphasis on impacting underserved populations. The Foundation’s Game Changer Grants are intended to help organizations make a positive impact in the community through grassroots action. Grants are awarded at one of three levels of funding: $5,000, $10,000, or $15,000. Applying organizations must have been in operation for three or more years. Support for Oral Health Initiatives in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio
Delta Dental Foundation: Community Mini-Grants
The mission of the Delta Dental Foundation (DDF) is to develop and enhance partnerships and programs to improve oral and overall health. In 2020, through its Community Mini-Grants program, the DDF will provide $200,000 in small grants of up to $5,000 to support programs that focus on adult and children’s oral health in Indiana, Michigan, or Ohio. Of particular interest are programs designed to increase access to dental care for at-risk populations, reduce consumption of sugary foods and beverages, educate about and provide oral healthcare to pregnant women and their babies, and educate about and improve children’s oral health, especially in school-based settings. Applications will be accepted from December 2, 2019, through January 31, 2020, and again from June 1 through July 31, 2020. Visit the DDF’s website to learn more about the Mini-Grants program.

The Grants for the Benefit of Homeless Individuals program supports the development or expansion of community infrastructure that integrates substance use disorder treatment, housing services, and other critical services for individuals (including youth) and families experiencing homelessness. The application deadline is December 16, 2019.

Historic Preservation Efforts Supported
National Park Service
Historic Preservation Fund Grants to Underrepresented Communities support the survey, inventory, and designation of historic properties that are associated with communities currently underrepresented in the National Register of Historic Places and among National Historic Landmarks. The application deadline is December 17, 2019.

Understanding Federal Grant Compliance
Federal grant compliance is a topic that may not be sexy, but it is integral to the success of any federal grant you may have received. To guide this conversation, I tapped into the expertise of federal grant compliance consultant and trainer Jerry Bertrand of Public Impact Advisors. Jerry has spent decades in the nonprofit and grant sectors in a variety of leadership roles, specializing in the Uniform Guidance, grant and financial management policies, and their related areas.
